About Me

I'd like to firstly introduce myself my name is Hayley and I'm the owner of Rock Vox Academy.

I have always had a passion for singing and I still do today.  I began my own singing journey when I was 4 years old and I fondly remember dressing up in my mums old coats and singing into a hairbrush.

I began singing lessons myself at aged 10 but had always from a young age taken part in choirs and chamber choirs.  It wasn't until I began myself taking singing lessons that it gave me the confidence to perform solos duets and quartets.  I loved and embraced many styles from folk to opera to rock pop to musicals and I once sang a beautiful Gaelic song.  These I believe helped me become the singer I am today having that vocal tuition from three very different singing teachers and it really helped.

At secondary school I auditioned for the school Rock band and I got the lead singer part singing Sheryl Crows' Favorite Mistake.  This made me realise that singing and music needed to be part of my life.

I moved onto study Popular Music and Recording at Clarendon College in Nottingham and achieved a BTEC qualification.  I got to experience working in many different styles of bands and performed regularly around Nottingham, Grantham and even did a tour around Germany.

I achieved a place at the prestigious Salford University in Manchester to  study a BA in Popular Music and Recording and was offered an unconditional place.  I gigged in several venues across Manchester.

I came back from Manchester and began singing teaching within two local schools three days a week (formerly Central Technology College) now known as Priory Ruskin and at Belvoir High School.  I also taught privately at the time too and had one student go on to MADD.

I decided to have a family and so I stopped teaching.  I opened up my Rock Vox Academy Studio in March 2016 and it is wonderful seeing my students developing their skills.  I now gig locally with my original indie band called Free 2 Decide.  I'm also involved in Uncovered: Promoting Original Music which is all about bands and musicians working together who write there own music being supported by venues doing various mixed genre band nights playing all their own songs rather than feeling they have to play cover songs.

My singing lessons are tailored to your needs whether you want to sing for fun, achieve Trinity Rock Pop Vocal grades or just want the confidence to audition for a music college/university or even to get on stage and perform solo or with a band.  I now offer singers the opportunity to perform in The Big Sing Show which is held once a year on stage in front of their loved ones.  We also go out to open mic nights to again get out of the "classroom" and practice honing our skills.  I offer group singing lessons that are themed during the holidays where up to 5 singers in a small group setting can sing songs from the greatest showman, Encanto, Mamma Mia, nativity...there is something for everyone.

Performing is something I encourage all my singers to do.  One of my singers used to fronts local teenage band "Naturally Sourced" and has performed at various music festivals including Knipfest.  Naturally Sourced have been known to BBC Introducing for writing their own music and also have it available to listen to on Spotify.  Naturally Sourced have more recently become more involved now they have more original songs to perform with Uncovered: Promoting Original music.  I help encourage singers if they ware wanting to write their own songs to support them to do this as a singer-songwriter myself.  For me teaching is all about practice - learning the skills - performing the skills learnt - learning from the performance - each time developing and growing.

Many of my singers have gone on to perform in other opportunities performing on stage in pantos and it has given them confidence to audition for roles.  My own daughter aged just 13 now sings in her teen band called "Triggered", they are all youngsters just enjoying performing and writing music together.  My daughter has just achieved the role of The Artful Dodger in MJH Productions show of Oliver!, this is alongside her performing in various school productions.  The singing lessons I teach her have given her the confidence to move forward to audition for shows.

If you are given the tools you can do what you'd like to do and that is what I aim to do here at Rock Vox Academy.  I also like for it to feel like a community and everyone gets involved and supports one another when we do shows.
